About this role

Voleon is a technology company that applies state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques to real-world problems in finance. For nearly two decades, we have led our industry and worked at the frontier of applying AI/ML to investment management. We have become a multibillion-dollar asset manager, and we have ambitious goals for the future.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Developer Experience (DevEx) team within Software Platform, you will design and evolve the core development platform that enables engineers to build, test, deploy, and maintain software quickly and reliably across the company. The team owns the systems, standards, and tooling that power the software development lifecycle — build systems, CI/CD pipelines, test infrastructure, and deployment automation.

Operating at the center of how the whole engineering org ships code, this is a high-leverage area: the tools you build directly shape the speed, reliability, and quality with which every team at the firm delivers software.

You will partner closely with application engineering, Infrastructure, Security, and ML research teams to reduce friction in common development tasks, standardize workflows, and modernize tooling — enabling engineers and researchers to focus on domain-specific work rather than infrastructure plumbing. This role operates at the developer-platform and tooling layer and emphasizes strong abstractions, automation, and developer productivity at scale.

Your Team

We look for engineers who are motivated by solving complex problems through strong fundamentals and thoughtful system design. You'll work in a highly collaborative environment that values experimentation, clear ownership, and efficient execution. Our team includes experienced engineers from leading technology companies and top academic programs, building the high-leverage tooling that the rest of the firm's engineers rely on every day.

Responsibilities

  • Design and improve the build → test → deploy pipeline so it is fast, reliable, and automated by default

  • Evolve build-system tooling (e.g., Bazel rules and macros) to meet growing engineering needs

  • Reduce build, test, and deployment latency and drive down slow and flaky tests

  • Build and standardize automated deployment pipelines across environments

  • Lead company-wide modernization — language, framework, and dependency upgrades, and retirement of end-of-life systems

  • Provide visibility into dependency age and technical risk across the codebase

  • Expand support for AI-assisted development workflows and integrate them into standard tooling

  • Lead complex projects from start to finish — gathering requirements, translating them into a rational software design, reasoning about supporting or dependent technologies, and communicating effectively with collaborators

  • Provide technical guidance to engineering and research staff

  • Mentor and grow individual contributors to continuously up-level the team

Requirements

  • Computer Science / Engineering degree, or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience

  • Proven track record of software design and implementation with focus on correctness, robustness, efficiency, and scale

  • Expertise in a modern programming language, such as Python, Go, Java or C++

  • Hands-on experience developing in a Linux/UNIX environment

  • Design and implementation of scalable services, tooling, and APIs used by other engineers

  • Experience with build systems and/or monorepos (e.g., Bazel, Buck, or similar)

  • Experience with CI/CD systems, test infrastructure, and deployment automation

  • Familiarity with containerization and deployment technologies (e.g., Docker)

  • Work with large codebases and experience building modular, extensible, and maintainable software

  • Strong communication skills and a proven ability to explain complex ideas with clarity and simplicity

Nice to Have

  • Experience improving developer productivity at scale

  • Dependency management and large-scale modernization / upgrade efforts

  • Integrating AI-assisted development tooling into engineering workflows
